Mindfulness can build confidence by helping us become practiced in experiencing what we feel.

Understanding Mindfulness

What is mindfulness? It’s the act of focusing our attention on the entirety of the present moment—our thoughts, body sensations, and awareness of our outer environment. Practicing mindfulness means being able to experience and process the feelings and emotions of the present moment, ultimately building confidence in our ability to handle life as it unfolds. However, this requires practice, as we often habitually push away things and feelings we dislike, diverting our attention from the present moment and into our thought-based opinions. The more we do this, the more we tend to form judgments and resistance to what is happening, undermining our confidence in facing and processing life’s challenges.

If we aim to boost our confidence and feel good about ourselves and our capabilities, we must practice accepting our inner feelings and sensations through life as it happens. This builds confidence in our ability to experience and be present with our emotions, which extends to facing new and challenging experiences. By doing so, we can then step out of our comfort zone and embrace the feelings that come with new experiences.

Building a Mindfulness Practice

To cultivate this level of self-confidence, dedicate 5-10 minutes daily to sitting and focusing your attention inward on your body awareness. You can call it a meditation, but I prefer to call it an awareness practice. Begin by observing your breathing sensations as your chest rises and falls, then gradually expand your awareness to each body part. With practice, you’ll become more familiar with your feelings, allowing you to much better navigate life experiences as they arise. The more comfortable you become with your feelings, particularly the uncomfortable ones, the more confidence you’ll gain in facing new challenges. Ultimately, this leads to greater freedom and happiness, as you’ll no longer be controlled by uncomfortable emotions.

In my opinion, this freedom is worth pursuing, as it promotes health and harmony in all aspects of life.
