Mindfulness - What is mindfulness, and how important is it in our lives?
Is mindfulness to pay attention to what we are doing? Maybe, but what does it mean to "pay attention"? And how can attention be "paid" for? To get a good sense of what mindfulness means, I combined a few definitions I could find of its meaning to create the most practical way to describe it.
"Focused non-judgemental awareness of our thoughts, body sensations, and the immediate environment as they occur."
I will break down my definition of mindfulness in hopes that you can more easily see the value of cultivating such an important life skill.
"Focused": Your awareness, thoughts, or point of perception is directed towards something specific.
"Non-judgemental": To see, or notice something objectively, without any opinion or assignment of emotional meaning.
"Awareness": Knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.
"Thoughts": The mental experience of reality through the ideas in our mind.
"Body sensations": The physical life experience that we feel from our body.
"Immediate environment": The present moment surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
How can being mindful make our lives better?
If we are not able to be present to what is going on, or in other words, we are not paying attention to what we are doing or what is going on in our immediate environment, then our behaviors will naturally happen through our automatic subconscious programs.
Have you heard of the old saying, "If you do what you've always done, then you'll get what you've always got"? When we operate on autopilot, we often put in a lot of energy into things going around in circles ending up right back to where we started. I would like you to think about that for a moment. If you want to achieve some now goal with more ease, then it will require focusing your energy, attention, and actions towards it. Taking mindful steps will get you there a lot easier than just going through life automatically the way you always have.
Mindfulness is the key that will help you to see how to unlock all the right doors to allow the life experiences you want. It takes practice to learn mindfulness, but it is well worth it!
