Coping With Panic Attacks: Strategies and Support

Panic attacks can really limit our lives and take away all the joy. I would like to help you regain this joy back, and to do so, I would like to get you started with a practical approach that starts with understanding how the problem is operating, so we can move into a solution from a clear and purposeful path. I find that to heal this issue area, it is helpful to see it clearly to help us understand how it works and what may be causing it. Here is a simple perspective that I like to use that I find helps to see it from a place that we can more easily relate to and understand. 

From there, I will walk you through some avenues that you can do on your own to help to elevate this issue, and as well I will talk about a full comprehensive approach through my Therapy services, that will help you to achieve your goals. Understanding Panic Attacks:

I believe that panic attacks are often triggered by past experiences that were too difficult to process emotionally. The subconscious mind creates a survival coping behaviour that disconnects the person from the unbearable feelings. Consequently, individuals unconsciously arrange their lives around their fears, perpetuating the coping behaviour to avoid facing those painful emotions again. Feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, shame, or unworthiness can serve as protective mechanisms to shield us from vulnerability, hurt, and work quite well to keep us from doing things that would make us feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately, this disconnects us from our body, heart, and intuition, trapping us in negative thoughts and fears, and as well, limits our options in life.

My Approach:

Through personalized therapy sessions, I aim to uncover the root causes of panic attacks by exploring past events and understanding the underlying emotions. I utilize a combination of counselling hypnotherapy, mindfulness-based processes, and practical tools to support the release of old protection programs and cultivate healthier coping mechanisms that promote harmony.

While therapy provides comprehensive support, there are also practical steps you can take on your own to manage panic attacks:

  1. Boost Self-Worth: Engage in activities that make you feel good about yourself, whether it’s pursuing hobbies, exercising, or completing tasks. Celebrate your achievements, big or small, to build confidence and reduce fear associated with panic attack triggers.
  1. Establish Self-Care Rituals: Prioritize self-care to prevent emotional exhaustion and overwhelm, common precursors to panic attacks. Create a list of relaxing activities that help you recharge and regain balance. Take breaks, stretch, and listen to your body’s needs to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. 
  1. Embrace Meditation: Cultivate a regular meditation practice to calm your mind and process emotions effectively. By acknowledging and sitting with your feelings, you counteract the buildup of unresolved emotions that contribute to panic attacks.
  1. Create a Calm Space: Practice meditation in a tranquil environment to reinforce feelings of safety and relaxation. Focus on your breathing and gently redirect your attention back to your body sensations when your mind wanders. This helps develop the skill of returning to the present moment of safety during moments of panic.
  1. Ground Yourself During Panic: When panic strikes, focus on your breathing and identify tangible objects in your surroundings to anchor yourself into reality. Distinguish between real threats and irrational fears by reaffirming what you see and confirming the present moment. This practice helps alleviate panic by grounding you in the here and now.
